No tow-ins today, surf was in the 20 to 30 foot range. A tow-in is where a wave is so large it is impossible to catch it by just paddling for it as one normally would. To assist in catching a wave a surfer would be towed by a jet ski until he reaches the speed to stand and ride the wave, usually way before it actually breaks. Typically this is used on waves in the 40+ foot range. Something you would see at Jaws in Maui, some years at Mavericks in CA, some place in France that I can't recall it's name, the Cape in South Africa and even at times at Waimea in Hawaii. Maybe we'll see a contest in "San Diego" one year.
