[ running... ] Ok I've decided to head back to the city for a run. I signed up for the San Francisco Half Marathon at the end of July. The prior weekend I'll be running the 10k Wharf to Wharf and for sure it'll put a smile on my face and prepare me for SF. This will be my third half marathon and I'm looking forward to a successful run. A few weeks ago I ran solid at that the Santa Cruz half marathon. Prior to SC I ran the Home Depot Half marathon in the city and I hated it. It was my first half and the weather stunk, rain, cold and windy out on the Pacific Coast Highway... yuck! I can't believe Runners World ranks this race as 5th best half marathon in the country. Obviously they never ran it ;) This year the race has a new sponsor and so the name was changed to Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon.

[ E911 ]  In the United States, E911 (Enhanced 911) is support for wireless phone users who dial 911, the standard number for requesting help in an emergency. Since wireless users are often mobile, some sort of enhancement is needed to 911 service that allows the location of the user to be known to the call receiver. E911 support is mandated by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for traditional mobile phone service and, since May 19, 2005, for certain VoIP service. Phase 1 of the E911 program required a service provider to provide the telephone number of a 911 caller and the location of the antenna receiving the call to a local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). Phase 2 requires the provider to furnish more precise information about the caller's location, usually to within 50 to 300 meters. Phase 2, which requires new technology, is to be completed by the end of 2005. On May 19, 2005, the FCC also required that Internet service providers who interconnect VoIP calls with the public switched telephone network (PSTN) must provide E911 service for these callers and call dispatchers. Providers are required to inform users of the capabilities and any limitations of their 911 service. Providers were given 120 days to comply. Previously, as a general policy, the FCC had taken a "hands-off" position about regulating Internet traffic on the argument that the Internet is an information service rather than a communications service. Providers do not have to furnish E911 service for VoIP callers who do not interconnect with the PSTN such as those using instant messaging and Internet gaming. You can read the FCC's public release here. California's breakdown of their PSAP service.

[ lions in the wild? ]  "A resident in unincorporated San Jose spotted a mountain lion today in his backyard". What a concept, a person living in wild see's the wild. Ok a bit farse I may be but Morgan Hill is known for Lion sightings. Morgan Hill, as beautiful as it is, is a small town in the middle of beautiful unincorporated land. Expect to see a Cat or two and consider yourself luck. Next time you see one, grab a beer and enjoy the wildlife scene that you are so lucky to have off your back patio. ;) This story shows us that the ppl of Morgan Hill are much more Cat friendly than the peeps in Palo Alto. In PA they would have laid down bullets from an M16 in their attempts to rid the cat. I think I came off a bit bitter on this thread....

[ Cat vs Dog.. next deadly step ]  More sightings in the Palo Alto area. THis is becoming like LA now where dogs are often hunted by Cats

[ Oakland has a pet ]  Oakland had another Lion scare. This would appear to be the same Lion only because the area is fairly close to the last report. But one could argue that given the large easterly expanse of wild land that there could be a few cats in the area or This time they tried to get a helicopter out to the area but they were too late. I wonder what they would have done with the helicopter? This is not Wolf hunting in Alaska!!

[ Here kitty kitty ]  Another Cat in Oakland.

[ what a coach! ]  Having a coach like this, I think many teams would be inspired and win! Hell, for that matter place this coach on the NHL Governors Board and let's get hockey back!

[ Coffee & A Cat ]  I cat was spotted in a tree close to Alum Rock while the home owner was drinking coffee. Damn.. that never happens to me!

[ Oakland Lion cases school yard ]  Another lion sight at a school in Oakland Hills but not confirmed.

The more and more I read "" by the more I realize California, as a whole, is not prepared to manage Mountain Lions. The State has shown no progression with preparing local authorities in removing (either through death or transplant) Lions from sensitive areas. I agree that allowing the State to issue Lion hunting tags is a start but it should not stop there. Rangers and Police need to be equipped with tranquilizer capable of managing a large cat. Proper cat transportation to outlying areas is required. Education to people of the average character of Lions. What they are are afraid of and what not. What I mean is if dogs are safe, so are the children. History shows us that once a cat takes down a dog it has crossed the line in to which humans are next and it is a very very small step for the cat. Prior to that, there should not be, for the most part, a worry. But always be aware. Situation awareness is key.

[ Lion in the hills & the dunes ]  A couple sightings this past weekend. Another weekend in which I had zero sightings. Alum Rock Piso
